What professional qualifications and experience are required to become the Ombudsman?
A candidate for Ombudsman must be a member of the Philippine Bar with recognized probity and independence. Furthermore, the Ombudsman must have been a judge or engaged in the practice of law in the Philippines for ten years or more. They must also not have been candidates for any elective office in the immediately preceding election. These professional prerequisites are strictly outlined in Article XI, Section 8, 1987 Philippine Constitution. “…of recognized probity and independence, and members of the Philippine Bar, and must not have been candidates for any elective office in the immediately preceding election.
