What does the Constitution say about the social function of property?

The Constitution explicitly states that the use of property inherently bears a social function. Consequently, all economic agents are expected to contribute positively to the common good of society. Individuals and private groups have the right to own and operate economic enterprises, but this is not an absolute right. The State has the duty to promote distributive justice and may intervene when the common good demands it, per Article XII, Section 6, 1987 Philippine Constitution. “The use of property bears a social function, and all economic agents shall contribute to the common good. Individuals and private groups, including corporations, cooperatives, and similar collective organizations, shall have the right to own, establish, and operate economic enterprises, subject to the duty of the State to promote distributive justice and to intervene when the common good so demands.” 22-Mar-26
