What crime and penalty is imposed upon a person who assists another in committing suicide?
Any person who assists another to commit suicide shall suffer the penalty of prision mayor (Article 253, Revised Penal Code). The act of giving assistance must lead to the self-killing of the victim. If the person giving assistance takes the extreme measure of doing the killing themselves, they shall suffer the much graver penalty of reclusion temporal. This demonstrates the law’s prohibition against the voluntary taking of one’s own life, even with assistance.
