Can an employer provide a meal period shorter than one hour?
An employer may provide a shorter meal period of not less than twenty minutes under specific, exceptional cases. Rule I, Book III of the Omnibus Rules Implementing the Labor Code of the Philippines permits this if the work is non-manual, operations run at least sixteen hours a day, or there are impending emergencies. It is also allowed if the work is necessary to prevent serious loss of perishable goods.
