When can a court double the amount of damages awarded?
Damages can be doubled if the infringer circumvents effective technological measures protecting the work. Doubling also applies if a person removes or alters electronic rights management information with knowledge that it facilitates infringement. This penalty reflects the severity of bypassing digital protections or manipulating rights data.
