What power does the Ombudsman have to correct abuses or improprieties in the performance of government duties?

The Ombudsman has the power to direct any public official or employee to perform and expedite any act or duty required by law. Conversely, the Ombudsman can also direct them to stop, prevent, and correct any abuse or impropriety in their duties. This directive power applies to all subdivisions, agencies, and government-owned or controlled corporations with original charters. This corrective authority is defined under Article XI, Section 13, 1987 Philippine Constitution. “(2) Direct, upon complaint or at its own instance, any public official or employee of the Government, or any subdivision, agency or instrumentality thereof, as well as of any government-owned or controlled corporation with original charter, to perform and expedite any act or duty required by law, or to stop, prevent, and correct any abuse or impropriety in the performance of duties.” 06-Mar-26
