What is the purpose of Article 279 regarding penalties for offenses related to the abandonment and exploitation of helpless persons?

Article 279 ensures that the imposition of the penalties prescribed for abandonment and exploitation offenses does not prevent the imposition of penalties for any other felonies committed (Article 279, Revised Penal Code). This means that if, during the commission of, say, exploitation of a minor, the offender also commits physical injuries or another felony defined by the Code, they shall be punished for both offenses. This rule prevents the lesser penalty from absorbing the penalty for a graver, separate felony.
