What is the liability for using a false designation of origin in commerce?

  Any person who uses a false designation of origin or misleading representation of fact in commerce is liable to a civil action. This applies if the act is likely to cause confusion or mistake regarding the origin, sponsorship, or approval of goods. Section 169.1 Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines grants the right to sue for damages and injunctions to anyone likely to be damaged. This law prevents companies from lying about where their products come from or who endorses them,,. “SEC. 169. False Designations of Origin… 169.1. Any person who… uses in commerce… any false designation of origin… shall be liable to a civil action”   January 7, 2026
