What is the legal definition of marriage under Philippine law?

Under the law, marriage is legally defined as a special contract of a permanent union between a man and a woman. It must be entered into in accordance with the law specifically for the establishment of conjugal and family life. It is considered the foundation of the family and an inviolable social institution. The nature, consequences, and incidents of marriage are governed by law and cannot be subject to stipulation, according to Article 1 Family Code of the Philippines. “Art. 1. Marriage is a special contract of permanent union between a man and a woman entered into in accordance with law for the establishment of conjugal and family life. It is the foundation of the family and an inviolable social institution whose nature, consequences, and incidents are governed by law and not subject to stipulation, except that marriage settlements may fix the property relations during the marriage within the limits provided by this Code.” 31-Jul-26
