What determines if a sound recording is protected in the Philippines?

A sound recording is protected if its producer is a national of the Philippines. Protection also applies if the sound recording was first published in the country. This ensures that local producers and local first releases are legally safeguarded. These points of attachment are listed in Section 223 Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.   “SEC. 223. Points of Attachment for Sound Recordings. – The provisions of this Act on the protection of sound recordings shall apply to: 223.1. sound recordings the producers of which are nationals… 223.2. sound recordings that were first published in the Philippines.”   January 8, 2026
