How long must a person reside in the Philippines before they can run for President?

The Constitution mandates a residency requirement for anyone aspiring to the highest office in the land. The person must have been a resident of the Philippines for a minimum of ten years. This residency must immediately precede the date of the presidential election. Such a rule ensures the candidate is well-acquainted with the local conditions and needs of the Filipino people. Article VII Section 2 1987 Philippine Constitution   “SECTION 2. No person may be elected President unless he is a natural-born citizen of the Philippines, a registered voter, able to read and write, at least forty years of age on the day of the election, and a resident of the Philippines for at least ten years immediately preceding such election.”   03-Feb-26
