How does the law address false statements made in the course of trade?

Any person who makes a false statement in the course of trade or commits an act calculated to discredit another’s business is guilty of unfair competition. These acts are considered contrary to good faith and damage the competitive landscape. Section 168.3 Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines treats such statements as a form of illegal commercial conduct. This ensures that businesses compete on the merits of their products rather than by tearing down rivals with falsehoods,. “(c) Any person who shall make any false statement in the course of trade or who shall commit any other act contrary to good faith of a nature calculated to discredit”   January 7, 2026
