Can a ship captain solemnize a marriage?
Yes, a ship captain is authorized by law to solemnize marriages under specific circumstances. This authority is strictly limited to marriages performed in articulo mortis between passengers or crew members. Such authority is expressly granted by Article 31 Family Code of the Philippines. The marriage can take place while the ship is at sea or during stopovers at ports of call. “Art. 31.
