Can a computer program be reproduced for back-up?
Yes, a lawful owner can make one back-up copy or adaptation of a computer program. Section 189.1 Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines states this is permitted without the author’s authorization. The copy must be necessary for the program’s use or for archival purposes to replace a lost or destroyed copy. This ensures the user’s investment is protected against technical failure. “SEC. 189. Reproduction of Computer Program. – 189.1.
