When does copyright protection begin?

Works are protected by the sole fact of their creation, regardless of their mode or form of expression. Section 172.2 Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines clarifies that protection is independent of the work’s content, quality, or purpose. No formal registration is required for copyright to subsist in an original work. This “moment of creation” rule is a cornerstone of Philippine copyright law.   “172.2. Works are protected by the sole fact of their creation, irrespective of their mode or form of expression, as well as of their content, quality and purpose. (Sec. 2, P.D. No. 49a)”   January 7, 2026
