What rights does a publisher have in a “Published Edition of Work”?

A publisher holds a copyright consisting specifically of the right to reproduce the typographical arrangement of the edition. Section 174 Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines provides this right in addition to rights granted by the author. This protection focuses on the visual layout and formatting created by the publisher. It is distinct from the copyright in the literary content itself.   “SEC. 174. Published Edition of Work. – In addition to the right to publish granted by the author, his heirs or assigns, the publisher shall have a copyright consisting merely of the right of reproduction of the typographical arrangement of the published edition of the work.
