What happens to a person’s citizenship if they marry a foreigner but do not renounce it?
If a Filipino citizen marries a foreigner, they do not automatically lose their Philippine citizenship. The Constitution explicitly states that they shall retain their status as citizens. Loss only occurs if their specific acts or omissions are legally viewed as a renunciation of citizenship. According to Article IV Section 4 1987 Philippine Constitution, marriage alone does not end citizenship. “SECTION 4. Citizens of the Philippines who marry aliens shall retain their citizenship, unless by their act or omission they are deemed, under the law, to have renounced it.” 28-Jan-26About Nicolas and De Vega Law Offices
