What are the requirements for a priest or minister to solemnize a marriage?

Religious leaders such as priests, rabbis, imams, or ministers can easily solemnize marriages under highly specific conditions. They absolutely must be duly authorized by their church or religious sect and strictly registered with the civil registrar general. They must also exclusively act within the limits of the written authority granted to them by their specific church. Furthermore, at least one of the contracting parties must definitely belong to the solemnizing officer’s religious sect, as required by Article 7 Family Code of the Philippines. “Art. 7. Marriage may be solemnized by: […] (2) Any priest, rabbi, imam, or minister of any church or religious sect duly authorized by his church or religious sect and registered with the civil registrar general, acting within the limits of the written authority granted him by his church or religious sect and provided that at least one of the contracting parties belongs to the solemnizing officer’s church or religious sect;” 31-Jul-26
