What are the marriage license requirements for members of ethnic cultural communities?

Members of ethnic cultural communities are not strictly required to obtain a standard marriage license. Their marriages remain legally valid even without this specific document. This exemption is explicitly stated in Article 33 Family Code of the Philippines. The law only requires that their marriages be solemnized according to their own cultural practices and rites. “Art. 33. Marriages among Muslims or among members of the ethnic cultural communities may be performed validly without the necessity of a marriage license, provided that they are solemnized in accordance with their customs, rites or practices.” 31-Jul-26
