How long is a layout-design registration valid and when does its protection begin?
Registration of a layout-design is valid for a period of ten years and cannot be renewed. This duration is mandated by Section 118 Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines. Protection begins on the date of the first commercial exploitation anywhere in the world, provided an application is filed within two years of that date. If it hasn’t been commercially exploited, protection starts on the filing date accorded to the application. “118.5.
