Can right-holders designate a society to manage their rights?

Yes, owners may designate a society of artists or writers to collectively manage their economic or moral rights. Section 183 Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines requires these societies to secure accreditation from the Intellectual Property Office. This collective management helps in the enforcement of rights and collection of royalties. It is especially useful for musicians and authors whose works are used frequently by many parties.   “SEC 183. Designation of Society. – The owners of copyright and related rights or their heirs may designate a society of artists, writers, composers and other right-holders to collectively manage their economic or moral rights on their behalf. For the said societies to enforce the rights of their members, they shall first secure the necessary accreditation from the Intellectual Property Office. (Sec. 32, P.D. No. 49a)”   January 7, 2026
