Can journalists be compelled to reveal their sources under the Data Privacy Act?

The Data Privacy Act heavily respects existing laws and does not compel publishers, editors, or duly accredited reporters to actively reveal their confidential sources. They are fully protected from exposing the source of any news report or information appearing in their respective publications. This applies if the sensitive information was explicitly related in any strict confidence to such publisher, editor, or reporter. This powerful protection for media professionals is guaranteed in Section 7 IRR. “a. Publishers, editors, or duly accredited reporters of any newspaper, magazine or periodical of general circulation shall not be compelled to reveal the source of any news report or information appearing in said publication if it was related in any confidence to such publisher, editor, or reporter.” 22-May-26
