What is the constitutional status of the family?
The family is recognized as a basic autonomous social institution in the Philippines. The State is tasked with protecting and strengthening the sanctity of family life. It acknowledges the family as the fundamental unit of society. Article II, Section 12 1987 Philippine Constitution provides the framework for this protection. “SECTION 12. The State recognizes the sanctity of family life and shall protect and strengthen the family as a basic autonomous social institution. It shall equally protect the life of the mother and the life of the unborn from conception.
